On March 23rd at 7pm, we'll once again gather in the legendary Strand's beautiful Rare Book Room for our third ever Oliomuse. An Oliomuse is when we Massivemuse with ThinkOlio - an organization that's doing for professors what Groupmuse is doing for classical musicians. They bring a professor, we bring the band, and we all share an evening of music, filled out with a disquisition on the cultural, historical, and musical context from which the masterpiece emerged.
And this one is gonna be a real scream. It'll be an in-depth exploration of Dmitri Shostakovich's 8th String Quartet, arguably the most celebrated string quartet of the last century. Written in a frenzy of terror and at the peak of Stalin's totalitarian state, Shosti 8, a maniacal kaleidoscope of beauty and horror, is dedicated to the victims of war and fascism and speaks to themes that are unfortunately as relevant as they ever were.
We'll start with a performance of the piece, which is about 23 minutes long, brought to us by a Juilliard string quartet. Then, returning professor Whitney George will probe deep, daylighting the work's darkest recesses. We'll finish the evening with another full performance of the work, newly furnished with a more profound understand of what the piece stands for and where it comes from, so that it speaks more fully than ever before. Like all of the best art, the string quartet is of such complexity and gravity that it only gets better with more.
It'll be an evening of unmatched power and you've got to be there. SixPoint is sponsoring the evening, so we'll free beer to keep us warm and jolly in the face of such a titanic emotion-scape.
Tickets are $25 (and $20 for supermusers) and Oliomuses always sell out, so get on that!
