About

Gloria Justen is a composer, violinist and violist known for her dynamic, emotionally-charged performances. She has released two albums of original music: Four-Stringed Voice: music for solo violin (2008), and Sonaquifer: Music for Solo Viola (2018). Her composing practice emerges from her lifelong immersion in music as a performer. A graduate of The Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, Gloria has performed and toured internationally with the Philadelphia Orchestra and the San Francisco Symphony, served as Concertmaster of the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia for six seasons, toured with the Philip Glass Ensemble, and played many works by other contemporary composers. Gloria lives in San Francisco and creates music for both traditional concert experiences and for electronic music settings.

My original music is based on the classical tradition, and influenced by Bach, Bartok, bird song and folk music. I like to play music that sings, dances, and tells a story. To do this I use every technique and sound on the instruments, including alternate tunings and extended techniques. But I always return to a singing tone that speaks to the heart.
