Host

Carla M. (she/her)

Please come enjoy some great music and performance by the fabulous Gloria Justen! We will gather on my front yard in a cul-de-sac to mingle and feel the music together!

I will have some cushions and picnic blankets to sit on, and a few chairs for those who prefer it. You are welcome to bring your own cushion or blanket.
Come between 5:30 and 6:00 PM for some time to socialize and meet new & old friends and neighbors.
The concert will begin at 6:00 PM and last for about an hour with a short intermission.
This is a BYOB event. Feel free to bring snacks/drinks to share!

Gloria Justen is a composer, violinist, and violist based in San Francisco. She is a performer with many years of experience playing with Philadelphia Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, new music ensembles, and modern dance groups, as well as performing as a soloist and chamber musician. She now focuses on composing and giving recitals combining original music with classical pieces. She also creates soundscapes combining electronic sounds with electric violin. Here is more info about Gloria and the music she will be playing:
Which piece of Baroque music has been used by directors in at least 21 feature films plus at least one famous commercial? You’ve probably heard it before, but you may not have heard the piece in full.
Johann Sebastian Bach’s Suite No. 1 for Solo Cello is the first of six multi-movement suites for cello, which can also be performed on viola or double bass. In this intimate garden recital, Gloria Justen will perform the First Suite on viola. She will introduce it with some interesting insights into why this particular piece has been so widely used to underpin film narratives. She will also speak a little bit about the 17th Century dance forms that infuse rhythm into Bach’s composition.
On the second half of the recital, after a short intermission, Gloria will perform two of her own recent compositions. By changing one scale step in each variation, Travel of Modes for Solo Violin travels through 20 different scale patterns (modes), creating glimpses of cultures from around the world. Time Travel Variations for Solo Viola takes the listener through different historical styles from baroque to folk and jazz in a musical time machine. Improvisation with Poetry
To complete the program, Gloria will invite Carla, the host of this concert, to read a few short poems she has chosen in advance. Gloria will hear them for the first time in the concert, and she will create “instant compositions” to accompany the readings. Who knows what will happen? It will be a surprise for everyone!
