Our program opens with one of the few chamber works by Frédéric Chopin, the lush and expressive Cello Sonata in G Minor. It is followed by Witold Lutosławski’s Grave: Metamorphoses, a tribute to musicologist Stefan Jarociński. The piece begins with four distinct notes quoted from Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande and unfolds from this slow start, accelerating and fragmenting rhythmically before returning to its four-note opening and ascending to its conclusion. The program closes with Beethoven’s Cello Sonata in A Major, No. 3, a work brimming with excitement, humor, and romance, ending with a brisk and rambunctious Allegro.
