Classical Guitar, Theorbo, Lute

About

Howdy, my name is Andrew Flory and I am a classical guitarist, theorbo player, and lutenist based Rochester, New York. I am currently a Doctoral Candidate and Performer’s Certificate recipient at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester. There I studied guitar with Naxos recording artist Dr. Nicholas Goluses and I am also pursuing an Advanced Performer’s certificate in Early Music with world renowned lutenist and historical performance practice expert Paul O’Dette. In addition to my solo guitar and theorbo performances, I play theorbo as a member of the Collegium Musicum Baroque orchestra led by Paul O’Dette and Christel Thielmann. I also perform on theorbo every Sunday night at Christ Church in Rochester with Schola Cantorum for their Candlelight Compline Service. Internationally, I have performed in the UK and Spain.

I received my Master of Music degree from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in 2020 which is also where I began my lute and theorbo studies.

  • "[The music] was amazing. 2 standing ovations!"

    - Barbara B., past guest at Portland Guitar Salon
  • "The ensemble was so tight, and the music was delightful. Probably the only time I will ever see and hear a therobo!"

    - Mary Kay W., past guest at Portland Guitar Salon
  • "Hypnotic in a delightful rhythmic way. The theorbo was amazing."

    - Kevin L., past guest at Portland Guitar Salon

Music

I have two active solo programs that I am currently performing. The first of which is solo theorbo program titled "Baroque Behemoth" and the second is a combined classical guitar and theorbo program titled "Fourteen and Six".

My solo theorbo program features music by Alessandro Piccinini (1566-1638), G.G. Kapsberger (1580-1651), and Robert de Visee (1655-1732). With works from these three composers, listeners experience the wide stylistic differences of 17th century Italian and French theorbo repertoire and will feel the power and nuance that the theorbo offers. My combined guitar and theorbo program offers listeners the same rare opportunity to hear solo theorbo but is also paired with some of my favorite classical guitar works.
