About

“sonorities reminiscent of the stormy meter-high waves of a wild ocean.” - Ostholsteiner Anzeiger
"a spectacularly creative young pianist...a very poetic player" – Orange County Register
“masterfully played” – Lubecker Nachrichten
Kai Ono is a composer-pianist and educator living in New York City. He likes the color grey, seeing the world, and games of most kinds. The program you’ll hear today will be dynamic and ever-changing — even Kai won’t really know what he’s going to play.
Kai commands many genres of music on the piano, but his primary specializations are classical and jazz. Although he really enjoys playing in smaller house venues, he’s also been on bigger stages like the Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall, the Jazz at the Lincoln Center, and the Laeiszhalle of Hamburg. Enough about awards, though. Outside of jazz and classical, Kai is a high-demand pianist and keyboardist for rock, hip-hop, neo-soul, and R&B groups around New York. He is not afraid of heights.

Music

On the classical end, I cover some of the warhorse Beethoven Sonatas, Bach Suites, and various Romantic classics. On the jazz end, I have a repertoire list of roughly 200 songs from the Great American Songbook, among other jazz instrumental classics. Much of my solo piano programs, however, are fully improvised, using feedback from the audience to concoct a spontaneous new piece for each performance.
