George England
Modern "classical" guitar, 19th century guitar
About
George Benton England, historical & modern guitars
I was born in Northern California and currently live in New York City where I perform and teach classical/modern guitar and theory. I am regularly engaged with the NYC-based Ensemble Music Humana, Sinfonia Spirituosa in California, and as guitarist with the Cantanti Project. Currently, I am on the faculty in guitar and musicianship at Diller-Quaile School of Music, Third Street Music School Settlement, Brooklyn Guitar School, and founded the Sacramento Guitar Institute. I hold a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Stony Brook University and am fortunate to perform with many amazing musicians! I look forward to working with you to create a nice night of guitar music.
Music
I perform a balance of old and new repertoire. I sometimes perform pieces chronologically, sometimes not. I usually include one or two works on a program that are best described as "avante garde" and challenge the mainstream views of classical music. Most of the work I perform comes from composers like Bach, Villa-Lobos, Fernando Sor, Mozart, Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Antonio Lauro, among many others. I sometimes perform on theorbo (a very long 17th century lute with 14 strings!) in addition to modern guitar and a 19th century guitar.
