This Program showcases the exhilarating and intimate repertoire of the violin cello duo, a genre that has been equally challenging and exciting for composers over the centuries. The duo by Montgomery, whose work is prolific and critically acclaimed, playfully examines the duo as a story of friendship and its many sides. Martinu's duo is a virtuosic and evocative display of folk idioms and drama. Halvorsen's sarabande, entrenched in the Romantic tradition, reinvents the Baroque sound with a richness that seems to exceed the size of the ensemble, while Ravel's sonata, a masterpiece of the genre, seems to join the instruments as one indivisible musical voice, with modes and melodies distinctive in French Impressionism and orientalism of the early 19th century. We hope you enjoy this dynamic program of great repertoire for an uncommon pairing!
