Bright Sheng was inspired to write his solo violin piece The Stream Flows from a famous Chinese folk song. The tonal quality of the violin mirrors the voice of a folksinger.
Aaron Jay Kernis wrote his piece Air in 1995 for Joshua Bell, and it remains one of his most well known chamber music works. The expressive work soars with lyricism and drama.
Aaron Copland's sonata encapsulates the composer's style in what is easily recognized as quintessential American classical music: open, simple harmonies, sweet melodies, and a fresh sense of discovery.
