Full program notes
The inspiration for this program's title comes from a journal entry the composer Sergei Prokofiev made during his trip to Southern California in the 1920s. He was absolutely entranced by the natural beauty of the coastline, and wrote: "I'm as ecstatic about California as it is about me." While on the trip, he composed the original vocalise version of his Five Melodies, the first piece on this program.
Also featured on this program is Suite Italienne, by Igor Stravinsky, also written in the 1920s. This is also a violin piece that was originally something else - in this case, the ballet Pulcinella. Stravinsky transcribed this light, neo-Classical music for violin and piano himself.
Last on the program is Camille Saint-Saens' Violin Sonata No.1 in D minor for Violin and Piano. Drama and virtuoso playing abound in the outer movements - but the sparkly scherzo and the shimmery Adagio shine like jewels.
