Full program notes

Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel and Clara Schumann are two of the most important women composers of the 19th century. Their works had a big influence on other composers whose works are now commonly performed, composers such as Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms and Felix Mendelssohn.

Prepare to be surprised at the beauty and depth of these women’s works and to learn a lot about the small world of 19th century piano personalities. Since I love history I'm excited to share the music and stories of these two important women.

Historical context

Fanny Hensel was the older sister of Felix Mendelssohn, and Clara Schumann married Robert Schumann. Both were trained extensively and widely recognized for their performance skills and compositions during their lifetimes.

Clara had a decades long performing career, while Fanny performed almost exclusively in private homes in deference to the wishes of her family.

Clara's music was published during her lifetime, while Fanny's was mostly suppressed and is just now being rediscovered. But both women had an outsize influence on the musical life of 19th century classical music that we've mostly forgotten about.
