Full program notes
The form of the piano sonata originates from the Baroque period, when sonatas for harpsichord (a predecessor of the piano) were common. This concert presents an unlikely pairing of two virtuosic piano sonatas: Ludwig van Beethoven’s Op. 110 Sonata in A-flat Major (1821), and Gabriela Lena Frank’s Sonata Andina para piano solo (2000). Before performing each work, I will talk about what makes these two works intriguing re-interpretations of the classical form of a sonata and (re)introduce you to the composers of these sonatas.
