Jose Maldonado presents a recital of music spanning centuries and continents performing rarely heard works for the guitar from Spain and France. The program will include one of the masterpieces for the instrument, the “Second Suite for Lute” by J.S. Bach. A native of Puerto Rico, Maldonado will also perform "Two Danzas from Puerto Rico" composed by Leonardo Egúrbida. Join us for this world tour of fascinating music for the guitar.
Puerto Rican guitarist Jose Maldonado has been an active performer and teacher in NYC since 2012. As a performer he has played in the Long Island Guitar Festival, The Mannes College, The New School for Music Guitar Seminars, SUNY Stony Brook University, Middlebury University, The University of Puerto Rico, The Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico, The Ezra Guitar Music Studio among others. Maldonado forms part of the music faculty at CUNY John Jay College, The Bloomingdale School of Music and the Ezra Guitar Music School. Jose has been working as the Artistic Director of the Bloomingdale School of Music since the 2013.
Maldonado holds a Bachelor’s degree in classical guitar performance from the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico where he studied guitar with Luis Enrique Juliá, Leonardo Egúrbida and Alberto Rodríguez. Jose moved to New York City to pursue a Master of Music degree in classical guitar performance in SUNY Stony Brook University where he studied classical guitar with Jerry Willard and Historical Performance Practice of Early Music with the harpsichordist Arthur Haas and the musicologist Sarah Fuller. After completing his Masters Maldonado received a scholarship for the Doctor of Musical Arts degree, which he completed in May 2016. His doctoral research focused on Bach’s second Lute Suite, the music of the 19th century for guitar and the autoctonal Afro-Caribbean classical music of Puerto Rico, the Danza Puertorriqueña.
