In tumultuous times throughout history, the value of the arts has been called into question. Even as artists, we often doubt ourselves and the worth we bring to society. Yet we know that in our field, we follow our own rules; we are not bound to tell linear or concrete stories. We have the freedom and the responsibility, to think for ourselves and push the boundaries of public thought.
As we embark on our tour through a divided country, we ask ourselves what we have to bring to communities as artists. Classical music is so often called irrelevant, its concert-hall audiences out of touch with the rest of modern society. At its best, though, this music has the power to transcend time and place.
On Palaver Strings' tour Simple Gifts, we will perform classical masterworks and folk melodies alike, framed by words from American poets, artists, historical figures, and current visionaries. Letting music take over where words fall short, we invite you to join us in a shared musical experience. As music gives us a time and place to reflect, we hope to bring communities closer together: made stronger by their diversity, wiser through dialogue, and more compassionate through shared experience. Palaver Strings' simple gift is music.
Palaver Strings, a musician-led string orchestra, is dedicated to the collaborative interpretation of classical masterworks. We were formally founded in 2014 by a group of young musicians from the Boston area.
Our name, "Palaver," comes from the term "palaver hut," a place of discussion and conflict resolution in Liberia. In our early days as an ensemble, we gave benefit concerts for the Liberian Education Fund and became familiar with and inspired by the term "palaver.”
Each member of Palaver Strings is passionate about taking classical music beyond the concert hall to engage with diverse and new audiences. It is in this personal and unconventional setting that Palaver Strings is able to use music to aid the discussion of social issues, promote education and healing, and inspire our peers and community to support the arts.
For our 2016-2017 season, "Neighborhood Music," we’re celebrating community, focusing on a different neighborhood throughout the Boston area each month with food, music, art— and unpacking what it means to live there. Over the course of the season we will visit Somerville, Cambridge, Quincy, Brookline, Boston, Jamaica Plain, Watertown, and towns in Mid-coast Maine. In each of these communities, we will give performances and workshops, collaborating with local venues, businesses, artists, schools, and organizations to connect with and learn about each other through music. Palaver Strings invites you to experience the joy of music with us, as we explore what community means to those throughout both Boston and greater New England.
