Gregory Lewis, a key figure in New York City's jazz and blues scenes, is renowned for his mastery of the Hammond organ and his innovative interpretations of Thelonious Monk’s music. Growing up in Long Island City during the height of the soul and funk eras, Lewis was deeply influenced by his father’s record collection, which sparked his fascination with Monk. By his teenage years, he was performing professionally across the city. While studying at The New School’s jazz program, Lewis’ mentor, Gil Coggins, sent him to sub at a gig, where he unexpectedly encountered a Hammond B3 instead of a piano. This pivotal moment set him on the path to becoming an organist. Inspired by Larry Young’s version of “Monk’s Dream,” Lewis committed to reimagining Monk’s work for the organ. His lifelong dedication has led to widespread acclaim and numerous opportunities, solidifying his reputation as the leader of the all-star Organ Monk trio, quartet, and quintet.

Music

Organ Monk is known for its jazz and blues repertoire, with Lewis specializing in reinterpreting Thelonious Monk’s works for the Hammond organ. He was recently named the #1 Rising Star for Organ in DownBeat’s 72nd Annual Critics Poll. While the group’s albums are mostly jazz, Lewis was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame as a "Great Blues Artist from New York" in 2012. Notable performances include collaborations with Sweet Georgia Brown at the Montreux Jazz Festival (2009) and Brianna Thomas at Jazz at Lincoln Center (2018). In August 2023, Organ Monk released its sixth album, Organ Monk Going Home, featuring Kevin McNeal on guitar and Nasheet Waits on drums. The first with Sunnyside Records, it was named a New York City Jazz Record “Best of 2023” and earned 4 stars in DownBeat’s Editors' Picks. A new album, the first to feature a vocalist, is set for release in February 2026.
