About
I have been a professional saxophonist in Los Angeles for the past 10 years, performing in funk, soul, and latin contacts with artists like Poncho Sanchez, the Four Tops, Breakestra, and Cold Duck. I also lead my own quartet, which performed original compositions and jazz standards at the Lighthouse Cafe, the Culver Hotel, and other iconic venues throughout Southern California. Our debut album, "Patience", is available on all streaming platforms.
I moved to Bloomington, Indiana in August 2024 to pursue a doctorate in jazz studies, but I'm anxious to keep the music and good times flowing with a new cast of characters! For house concerts, I have two groups - a trio with saxophone, bass, and piano, and a trio with saxophone, bass, and latin percussion. Both groups are working on my modern jazz arrangements of traditional Mexican songs and classic soul songs.
Music
My most obvious influence is modern jazz, with heroes like John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins coming through in everything I do, but I grew up in East LA, so Latin soul and rock are especially dear to my heart. As a proud Chicano artist, I try to fuse my two passions just as jazz musicians have always done, so in addition to the music of Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk, you might hear stuff by Smokey Robinson, Vicente Fernandez, and Santana.
