About

Born in Oita, Japan, New York-based violinist Sumire Hirotsuru has multifaceted interests in music, education, and media. This past season, she has appeared at Leipzig Gewandhaus, Pilobolous' Five Senses Festival, Chamber Music Society at Lincoln Center, and WQXR, collaborated with Yo-Yo Ma and Silk Road Ensemble, Bach Collegium Japan, Grammy-winning bandoneonist Héctor Del Curto, and served as a Education Advisor and Faculty at Classical Music Institute. As a member of Video Game Orchestra, she has recorded video game soundtracks including Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts series. Every year, she has invited Harvard students to her hometown for Summer in JAPAN, an education program for Japanese schoolchildren since 2012.

Sumire earned a B.A. from Harvard University in 2016, and a M.M. from The Juilliard School in 2018 as a recipient of the William Schuman Prize, awarded for outstanding achievement and leadership in Music. She has published her first book in Japan in February 2019.
