Arensky wrote a string quartet for an odd ensemble of instruments: violin, viola, and two cellos. This piece is a gem of Russian string quartet repertoire, and is dedicated to another famous Russian composer, Tchaikovsky. Each movement is based on a different theme:

The first movement based on a Russian orthodox psalm
The second movement is a theme and variations based on theme by Tchaikovsky's
The third movement opens with another psalm, and ends with a Fugue based on a theme from Beethoven
