About

Saxophonist, composer, educator, Joseph David Spence has made a name for himself as a staunch advocate for the saxophone in the concert hall and in his own compositions. A native of Southern California, Spence has had the opportunity to perform in prestigious concert halls around the United States as well as internationally including: Meng Concert Hall, Hatch Recital Hall, He Lu Ting Concert Hall, and Beijing Concert Hall. His teachers include some of the most respected saxophonists of California including: Dr. Christopher Bartz, James Rötter, and John Hallberg. He has also participated in several national saxophone conferences working closely with highly esteemed saxophonists: Timothy McAllister, Chien-Kwan Lin, Otis Murphy, Nathan Bogert, and Kenneth Tse. Spence is also an active competitior in several music competitions including the MTNA Young Artist and Chamber Music competition.

As the son of a film composer, Spence’s compositional voice takes its influences from the great film composers of our time in addition to the leading contemporaries of the classical music genre. His current catalog of works includes several pieces for saxophones including a multi-movement saxophone quartet and a composition for SATB choir and a saxophone quartet.

Spence received a Bachelor of Music degree from California State University, Fullerton's School of Music in 2016.
