The Southampton Flute Orchestra
About
Flautissimo (the Southampton Flute Orchestra) is a friendly and enthusiastic group of flautists of all ages that meets weekly during term time. The flute choir perform around five concerts a year in a variety of settings – from Winchester Cathedral's Christmas Market and carols at Hedge End to more formal concerts with other groups at the Turner Sims, Romsey Abbey, and elsewhere in Hampshire. As well as local performances, the group regularly perform at the BFS International Conventions, and have recently toured Edinburgh, Cornwall, and Dublin. In 2012 the group has participated in the Adopt a Composer scheme and premiered a new work by Lithuanian composer Ruta Vitkauskaite.
Flautissimo (the Southampton Flute Orchestra) is currently under the musical direction of Joanna Price. The group uses piccolos, concert, alto, bass and contrabass flutes.
Flautissimo has often been asked to perform at weddings, garden parties and other occasions: for example Flautissimo has previously performed at the Mayor of Eastleigh's Appeal, and subsequently was invited to take a flute quintet to play for the Mayor and his guests at a private function. Please contact us if you would like to discuss Flautissimo performing at your function.
If you enjoy playing the flute then Flautissimo is the place for you! New flautists are always welcome
While our group has upwards of 35 players and typically fields between 20-30 at events, we do on occasion provide smaller groups such as trios, quartets, quintets and sextets to particular events or occasions, or to play on our own concert programmes
Music
Our repertoire includes arrangements for flute choir and orchestra of classical works, together with new music written for flute choir and orchestra, in addition to works written for the group. We also sometimes play arrangements of popular music and show tunes. We can flex the programme according to the needs of the event.
It is of benefit to discuss the potential programme several months in advance of potential concerts, in order to build any special requirements into our rehearsal schedule.
