About

Katie Kim is a soon-to-be-graduate of Oberlin College and Conservatory where she studies with Alexa Still. She was recently selected to play in the Oberlin at Oakton Recital Series through Oberlin College. Ms. Kim has participated in many solo competitions: in 2016, she was a Musical Merit Finalist, and placed second in the Lansum International Competition and Festival in Los Angeles. She was also a prizewinner of the 2015 Grossmont College Scholarship Competition, received 1st prize in the San Diego Flute Guild ensemble competition, and was a recipient of MTAC’s Certificate of Merit scholarship. Kim has held principal positions in the Oberlin Conservatory’s Opera Orchestra, Oberlin Chamber Orchestra/Sinfonietta, and Contemporary Music Ensemble. She is also the current president of the Oberlin Flute Association, a student-run organization whose goal is to provide education through funded masterclasses and recitals for Oberlin students. She will be attending the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland to pursue her graduate studies.

She is also an active chamber musician. As a school-sanctioned project, she co-founded the Okapi Duo, a flute and guitar chamber duo with guitarist Brian King. The Okapi Duo has toured in San Diego, L.A, New Orleans, and Oberlin, and was the recipient of the global Great Composer Series 2017 Prize in the category “Music of the Americas.” She is also flutist of Ensemble TMT, consisting of flute, harp, and viola.

Kim is also passionate about the role that the arts play in society. She has held internship positions with the San Diego Symphony in the summer of 2015 and in January 2017 where she gained experience in development, community engagement, and education. In 2016, she attended the Oyster Bay Music Festival in Oyster Bay, New York, and returned in the summer of 2017 as an intern.

Kim is from San Diego and attended Poway High School, which in 2010 was recognized as a GRAMMY Signature School for excellence in music education by the prestigious GRAMMY Foundation. Past teachers include Michelle Rumley, James Romeo, and Pamela Vliek-Martchev.
