About

Barbara Hollinshead and Howard Bass have been performing thematically linked lute song programs for more than twenty-five years. Their programs usually include a selection of English lute songs from the late 16th and early 17th centuries, but they also perform French, Italian, and Spanish repertoire from the 16th and 17th centuries. They have performed several times on the Midtown Concerts series sponsored by the Gotham Early Music Scene in New York City (January 2018), on the Church of the Epiphany series in Washington, DC, at Penn Alps in Western Maryland, at the National Gallery of Art, among other venues. They have recorded three CDs, one of 16th and 17th c. French airs de cour and two of English lute songs. Their imaginative song program titles include "Sleep, Dreams, and Awakenings," "Time, Cruell Time," "Long Live l'Amour," and "Birds, Bees, Flowers, and Trees." Barbara is a member of ARTEK, a New York-based baroque chamber ensemble, and Howard is a member of Trio Sefardi.

Music

Lute songs and solos by John Dowland, Thomas Morley, Thomas Campion, John Danyel, and other Elizabethan composers; French chansons and airs de cour from the 16th and early 17th centuries; Italian Renaissance and early baroque repertoire, including songs by Monteverdi and Cavalli. We also perform Spanish music from the 16th century, but most commonly we perform music of the Elizabethan era.
