About

Alexandre Abdoulaev is a musicologist, conductor, arranger, and jazz and classical pianist. He earned his Ph. D. in Historical Musicology at Boston University (GRS'14), and holds a BM in piano performance and an MA in Musicology from the Catholic University of America (BTR'03, BTR'06). Alexandre is currently a Professor of Music Literature at the University of Delaware, and has given papers on the works of Artie Shaw and Stephen Sondheim at multiple national and international conferences. In addition to various academic pursuits, Alexandre is an active solo and ensemble performer in Washington, D. C., Baltimore, and Philadelphia, having performed with such jazz ensembles as Ghosts of Weimar, Charm City Stomp, and Band of Tomorrow. As a pianist, Alexandre specializes in the interpretation of early 20th Century post-Romantic works by Gershwin, Debussy, and Ravel, and their impact on broader social culture and zeitgeist of the period. Most recently, Alexandre performed with the Trinity Chamber Orchestra in Washington, D. C., performing George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue." In 2014, Alexandre was a featured guest on WGBH's Under the Radar with Callie Crossley, and the conductor in the 2016 season at the Barnstormers Theatre in Tamworth, NH, where he lead a series of critically acclaimed performances of Stephen Sondheim's "A Little Night Music." Alexandre currently resides in Baltimore, Maryland.
