About
San Francisco-based Duo Bohème is a flute/guitar duo featuring flutist Courtney Wise and guitarist Lyle Sheffler. Sheffler, a New York native and Wise, a bay area native, met in 2010 at the San Francisco Conservatory where they both were pursuing Masters Degrees. After numerous acclaimed solo performances around San Francisco and the Bay Area, they decided to continue their successful concertizing together post graduation.
The impetus of Duo Bohème is the idea of modern Bohemianism through artistic collaboration and innovative and diverse performances. Bohemianism is the practice of an unconventional lifestyle in the company of like-minded creative people involving musical, artistic, or literary pursuits. In this context, Bohemians are creative adventurers. As concert artists, Duo Bohème bring together music from around the globe in exciting and eclectic performances. They seek to embody the free spirit and adventurous ideals of bohemianism in their musical selections written by composers from around the globe as well as through unique, culturally-informed performances
After two successful concert tours and many performances around the bay area, Duo Bohème recorded their concert favorites for their first album, Senza Misura, which was released in November of 2014. Senza Misura consists of a wide variety of captivating repertoire leaving behind the classical norm and displays an extremely diverse array of styles. This innovative album features works by Ravel, Faure, Giuliani, Shankar, Tedesco, Ibert, and Borne/Bizet, from Latin to Hindustani to operatic to romantic. Senza Misura is now on iTunes and other online distribution sites including Amazon and CDBaby. The album has received glowing acclaim as Courtney and Lyle continue to concertize.
In July of 2015 Duo Bohème premiered Rasputin, a work written for the duo by Nashville-based composer Grant Ferris. The work, inspired by the mysterious death of Russian healer Grigory Rasputin as well as the Russian reputation for espionage, encapsulates the bohemian gypsy vibe of Duo Bohème and has become a fan favorite at live performances.
