About

Baritone Joel Goodloe, a Richmond, Virginia native, is a recent graduate of Carnegie Mellon University as a student of Jennifer Aylmer and Mildred Miller Posvar. This summer he will cover Morales in Carmen and Morbio in Die schweigsame Frau with Opera Theater of Pittsburgh. Next season he will perform Jesus in Bach’s St. John Passion with the critically-acclaimed Chatham Baroque and Handel’s Messiah with the Cleveland-based Apollo’s Fire. Recent engagements have included an all-Bach concert and Handel’s Messiah with Chatham Baroque. He most recently premiered two chamber operas, Echo by Davis Good and The Elephants by Xiao Lang at Pittsburgh Opera. Last season he also performed the role of Lockit in The Beggar’s Opera with Carnegie Mellon Opera and premiered a song cycle by Pittsburgh-based composer, Robert Schultz. In the summer of 2014, Mr. Goodloe joined the Ash Lawn Opera Festival as an Apprentice Artist performing Elder Ott in Young Artist performances of Susannah and Avram in mainstage performances of Fiddler on the Roof. In the 2013-2014 season, he made his Carnegie Mellon Opera debut as Siroco in Chabrier’s L’Etoile. Other roles have included Don Bartolo in Le Nozze di Figaro and Melchior in Amahl and the Night Visitors, as well as a number of musical theater works. As a concert soloist, Mr. Goodloe has sung the baritone solos in Dubois’ The Seven Last Words of Christ, Handel’s Messiah, and Schubert’s Mass in G. In Spring 2014 he was named a winner in the Pittsburgh Concert Society Young Artist auditions.

Pianist-conductor Brian Gilling has distinguished himself as an exceptionally versatile musician and collaborator. At the piano, Brian has played concerti under the batons of Dan Wen Wei and Dimitri Papadimitriou. His chamber ensemble, the Lîla Quartet, has performed extensively across the northeast, and was awarded CMU’s Silberman Award in 2016. In addition, he helped cofound NAT28, a new music ensemble out of Pittsburgh, PA. On the podium, he premiered Davis Good’s opera Echo with the CMU Contemporary Ensemble at Pittsburgh Opera’s headquarters. He has also served as assistant conductor for Don Giovanni (Undercroft Opera), Britten’s Albert Herring, and Chabrier’s L’Etoile. (CMU). Additionally, he has served as the music director for CMU’s Bach Choir, and frequently performs art songs with baritone Joel Goodloe. Brian has also conducted numerous orchestras in Pittsburgh and elsewhere, and in the summer of 2016 he will travel to Bulgaria to work with the New Symphony Orchestra. Brian earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Carnegie Mellon University. His principal teachers were Sergey Schepkin and Daniel Curtis, and additional studies with Brian Garman and Robert Page.
