About
Award winning flutist Ji Weon Ryu is currently pursuing her accelerated Masters of Music degree at The Juilliard School as a pupil of Robert Langevin. Ms. Ryu distinguished herself at the 2014 National Flute Association (NFA) Young Artist Competition in Chicago where she received 3rd prize. An ardent interpreter of contemporary music, Ms. Ryu has premiered several new works, including Interpresence by Jane Rigler for which she won 1st prize and the Best Performance of the Newly Commissioned Piece at the 2010 National Flute Association Soloists Competition in Anaheim, CA.
Ms. Ryu made her solo debut with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, performing at the age of 12. She also performed with the Seoul Symphony Orchestra and presented a recital at Kumho Art Hall for the “Kumho Prodigy Concert.” Ms. Ryu has contributed her enthusiasm to the many ensembles of the Juilliard, playing all positions in the Juilliard Orchestra, the Juilliard Chamber Orchestra and the New Juilliard Ensemble. As principal flute of the New England Conservatory (NEC) Prep School Youth Philharmonic Orchestra (YPO), she performed at Dvorak Hall, Slovak Radio Hall, Smetana Festival and Musikverein for 2011 NEC Prep. YPO Concert Tour to Europe. She was chosen as principal flutist to participate in New York String Orchestra Seminar 2014, performing in Carnegie Hall.
Ms. Ryu was born in Seoul, Korea, and began studying flute at the age of 10. She has studied with Young Ji Song and So Young Lee in Korea and graduated with high honors from the Walnut Hill School for the Arts, where she studied with Judy Grant and received NEC Prep Woodwind Department Award. She hold Bachelor of Music degree at the Juilliard School, as a pupil of Carol Wincenc. She is also passionate about sharing music with others and is part of the Gluck Fellowship at The Juilliard School, traveling to various hospitals in Manhattan to perform with her trios and two ballet dancers.
