Full program notes

The well-known Spanish painter Francisco Goya (1746-1828) is considered by many to be one of the first modern socially critical artists. One of his most famous works is the "Caprichos", a series of pictures that depict, criticize, ridicule and diagnose the social conditions of his time. The Italian composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (1895-1968) took 24 pictures from this series and brought them to life musically by setting them to music. In my program "Goya's Spain" you can hear some of these pieces of music and see Goya's pictures that go with them. The concert opens with the first picture in this series, a self-portrait of the artist, for which I produced a short film together with the Cologne filmmaker Julian Güttge. This short film will then be presented to the audience together with the live music.
To complement Tedesco's music, the audience can also look forward to pieces by important Spanish composers such as Isaac Albeniz, Enrique Granados, Joaquín Rodrigo and Francisco Tarrega.
