Full program notes

The multifaith/multicultural Down Came an Angel program, by pianist Jacqueline Schwab, heard on Ken Burns' Civil War series and others, features heartening vintage American holiday music, in arrangements often quiet and reflective but sometimes joyous and uplifting. It includes traditional Appalachian carols (learned in Kentucky and North Carolina), South Carolina sea island spirituals (including one from the earliest publication of African American music), Victorian holiday Christmas standards (such as It Came Upon the Midnight Clear, written by a 19th-c. UU Minister in Wayland), Hanukkah songs (from my multifaith heritage), and more. I speak about the pieces in their historical context and their meaning today. See a video Jacqueline's performance of three of these pieces for WGBH's 2022 Holiday Celebration (start at 11:45):
