French and Italian gems! Ethereal impressionist music by Ravel and Faure, plus favorite, listenable Italian songs and opera tunes, centered around an elegant serenade by flute/guitar master composer Ferdinando Carulli.


Historical context

This program is from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. First, classical French impressionism played on alto flute sets the stage with an atmospheric aural color palette, rather than expressing sentiment. Then, for contrast, the expressive Italian spirit is represented in an ornate eighteenth-century serenade of flute and guitar master composer Ferdinando Carulli, followed by lyrical, lively and poignant Italian opera and popular song melodies.
