Full program notes

Ludwig van Beethoven: “Archduke” Piano Trio in B-flat Major, Op. 96
- One of Beethoven’s most famous works, this piece was dedicated to his dear friend and patron, Archduke Rudolph. This piece was also, sadly, the last public performance of Beethoven as a pianist before his deafness completely overtook him. This work takes both us and the audience through a wide range of emotions and characters. In particular, we find the serenity of the first movement and timelessness of the third movement magical.

Bedrich Smetana: Piano Trio in G minor, Op. 15
- This intense, emotional work was dedicated to Smetana’s daughter, who died of scarlet fever at the age of 4. The anguish and sorrow is immediately recognizable from the start, with a violin solo full of musical sighs and laments. We hope to convey the intensity and tragedy of this work through its beautiful solo passages, intense cries of sorrow, bittersweet nostalgic memories, and remembrance of a happy joyous past.

Matthew Tirona: “Is It Still Autumn?”
- This short work was commissioned by us and written by our fellow student and composer at New England Conservatory, Matthew Tirona. It is a wonderful piece that inspires us to reflect on the beauty of the Autumn season and foliage.
