Full program notes
We plan a different selection of duet music for every concert - some of our favorites include:
JS Bach, Two-part Inventions (Baroque)
WF Bach - Sonatas for Two Flutes (Baroque)
Telemann - Sonatas for Two Flutes (Baroque)
These composers laid the basic musical foundation for modern flute music.
F. Devienne - Sonatas for Two Flutes (classical)
J.B. Loeillet - Sonatas for Two Flutes (classical)
Composers from this era favored the beauty and purity of the Boehm (silver concert) flute.
Shulamit Ran - Sonatina for 2 Flutes (Modern)
A unique composition, written when the composer was 12 years old.
Christopher Caliendo - Por Siempre y Para Siempre for 2 Flutes (from the “American Tango” collection)
Christopher Caliendo - Jal (Journey) for flute & alto flute (from the Gypsy Americano collection)
We love these works, which draw their styles from the global flute community
Mike Mower - Blowing A Storm (selections) (modern jazz)
Not the boring stuff!
[Our actual program may vary, depending on the time allowed, as we acquire new repertoire, and make adjustments for the venue, type of audience, and interest]
Historical context
Flute duets have a long history in chamber music, going back to the Baroque era, in which the "recorder" and the "flauto traverso" were coming to be seen as virtuoso instruments. Our program highlights a wide range of musical styles, from the venerable Bach family, to modern-day composers.
