Jean Françaix - String Trio
WA Mozart - Selections from "Divertimento in Eb, K 563"
Ernó Dohnanyi - Serenade, Op. 10
These are ~seriously fun~ string trios. Their craft is second-to-none, but they are light-hearted masterpieces. No knowledge or forethought is needed for this program! These are pieces meant to be felt and enjoyed in the moment.
Interestingly, Mozart and Dohnanyi both took up the divertimento or serenade form for their string trios. This was an open form, usually for strings and in many movements, to be played after dinner at a party, sometimes outside or across different sites of the estate. While Mozart's Divertimento was part of this tradition, Dohnanyi's Serenade was written in 1904 for the concert stage. The Françaix trio is more of a hidden gem, full of effortless cool and wit, and while he doesn't call it a divertimento, it feels the most like a series of diversions in a self-driving car!!
We offer these string trios as spring trios to usher in the season. Full of verve and possibility, but not without bouts of reflection, we hope they resonate with you at this time of year.
