Historical context
Irene and Ledah are long-term colleagues in the group Bergamot Quartet; we are coming together for this duo program because we love all sorts of chamber music, and have a repertoire of thrilling pieces for violin/viola and cello. With this program, we showcase a wide variety of music from the last hundred years that highlights the intimate communication required from both players, particularly with music composed by and for the performers. The catalyst is Ravel's gorgeous 1922 duo, and the bulk of the program is Ledah's original music, including some of her earliest pieces (Ravel was a huge inspiration) and some written in the past two years. Goldfarb's work was composed specifically for us, and Sabzghabaei's duo is a unique work that grapples with vulnerability, asking us to perform literally seated back-to-back, communicating not by sight but by the proximity of our breaths and bodies.
