Full program notes
Debussy, Sonata for Violin and Piano in G minor, L. 140
Ravel, Piano Trio in A minor
These two pieces were written in the midst of World War I. The Ravel trio was written in the summer of 1914, in the weeks before Ravel enlisted in the army and went to the front. The Debussy was the last piece he completed and performed in 1917, before his death in 1918. While both pieces reflect the darkness and uncertainty of their society unraveling before them, they are works of incredible beauty, wit, and lyricism.
