Historical context

Mozart's "Kegelstatt" Trio is one of the first chamber music works ever written for the clarinet, and its historical significance is matched by Mozart's infectious wit and lyricism. Jennifer Higdon's work DASH was originally conceived for a saxophone, but our performer Matthew Boyles knows how to adapt such things to his clarinet. Bela Bartok's flashy and swaggering "Contrasts" was originally written for big-band clarinetist Benny Goodman. George Gershwin was one of the early Americans to bring together the worlds of jazz and popular American music with the classical concert stage. His "An American in Paris" is originally a work for full symphony orchestra, here arranged for trio by Matthew Boyles.
