Guitar of the Americas

Tomas Rodriguez full profile / Solo Guitar / 1 musician
Full program notes
In this program, Tomas Rodriguez explores the roots of the Spanish guitar in Africa, the gems of the 15th and 16th century Spanish vihuela music and the earliest compositions for solo flamenco guitar. As these root traditions come into contact with African, Indigenous and European musical forms in the Americas, a rich new body of solo guitar compositions arise. The program will feature compositions from Brazil, Cuba and Venezuela that are especially illustrative of the new rhythmic and harmonic textures that emerge. Finally the program will conclude with one or two original compositions reflective of the program’s historical “journey”.
