A lot of you know that The Claymont Society was founded by disciples of the Georgian philosopher/mystic George Gurdjieff. Fewer of you realize that among so many other gifts, Gurdjieff was possessed of a deeply musical spirit and, with the help of his student Thomas de Hartmann - one of the most accomplished Russian composers and pianists of his day - Gurdjieff penned hundreds of works for solo piano.
He draws upon a vast and kaleidoscopic life experience - a tuneful moment from the Armenian countryside here, a revery from the Tibetan plateau there. His travels across Eurasia are manifested in these gems and the Sacred is carried in every note. It’s music to meditate to, to get lost in — it creates a field of inner possibilities as it builds.
And! Lucky for us, on this Saturday Night, we’ve got a groupmuse packed with these mystical masterworks in Claymont’s Octagon, courtesy of pianist Melanie Monsour - one of our generations foremost interpreters of Gurdjieff/de Hartmann works. The program will also include her own original compositions.
The groupmuse starts at 7.30pm and the music will start at 8. BYOB and, if you wish, a musical instrument for an epic jam afterward. It classic style, we’ll have a bonfire following the performance and we hope you’ll stay late into the night!
