What is “High Art”? How did it get so high? If some art is “high” does that mean the rest of it is “low"? Who has the authority to make these distinctions and wherefrom does that authority come?

Intellectual/historian/author John Brewer has recently published a book on the birth and development of English High Culture, which was never an inherent quality of the island’s society - but rather was actively developed by publishers, theatrical and musical impresarios and the like over the course of a couple centuries.

And, our always innovative and brilliant friends at The Aspect Foundation for Music and Arts is bringing through John Brewer and a crew of astonishingly great musicians to take us on a Grand Tour of 18th Century Europe for a Groupmuse Night Out! And where better for such a tour than the absolutely sublime Bohemian National Hall?!

Historically, The Grand Tour was an initiation of sorts - it was a trip that wealthy young men would take across Europe to saturate themselves in what was coming to be called European High Culture. Through an illustrated talk, John Brewer will explore the remarkable importance of The Grand Tour - and it’s continued relevance to how we think about High Art today.

And, of course, the evening will be overflowing with music as we tour through time and space: The electrifying Four Nations Ensemble joined by celebrated soprano Pascale Beaudin will share with us the music of Vivaldi, Pergolesi, Corelli, and Jean-Baptiste Quentin.

As ever with Aspect, tickets come with free wine and tasties before the show and during the intermission.

Tickets are typically $45, but we’ve got a stack for only $20 - more than half off! But it’s limited so make your move!

And have a great Night Out!
