L'Ange Marais: This program will present the music of the most celebrated composer of the viola da gamba: Marin Marais (1656-1728). Noted for having played "like an angel”, Marais spent his entire career at Versailles working under Louis XIV. There he published five monumental volumes of viola da gamba suites, as well as a number of operas and other instrumental works. We will be treated to a small taste of his angelic oeuvre.
The program will also feature an instrument that we rarely hear, the baroque harp, also known as the triple harp because it has three rows of strings.
I am thrilled that the viola da gamba will be played by Arnie Tanimoto, who recently was awarded the Gold Medal of the 7th International Bach-Abel Competition. Parker Ramsay will join Arnie on the harp.
So here are the more mundane details — Gather at 7:00 PM to enjoy the informal company of friends and new acquaintances in my Brooklyn Heights home. The program will begin at about 7:30 PM. I will provide plenty of appetizers. Please bring a beverage (wine, beer, soda) to share and payment to show your appreciation for the musicians. While our home is technically not accessible, the venue is only one flight up.
What's the music?
