Please join us for a most unusual evening of Baroque and contemporary pairing. Violist Aaron Smith and Bassoonist Jay Rauch, both composers, will take us from Telemann to contemporary-cum-experimental with a concert that is best described by quoting from their description:
Through a postmodern lens, this concert advances the notion of historical performance as museum, wherein cultural objects – in this case music compositions – are pulled from the past into the present. Telemann’s music will be used as the object to be shaped, reflected, and refracted via destructive and generative feedback loops it creates in conjunction with the performers and audience. By convoluting past and present, the human and non-human, this program speculates upon the power of repetition and intersecting spatiotemporal subjectivities to create new art.
Jay and Aaron will each perform an unaccompanied solo written by Telemann, but which has been transplanted onto a modern instrument. Each of those solos will in turn be paired with a new electroacoustic composition that uses Telemann’s music as material for re-invention. These new compositions are being written by Aaron and Jay for each other. I heard a short clip, and believe me, this will be exciting, contemporary music at its best.
Please join us for an aurally and intellectually stimulating evening of music put together by two outstanding young composers.
Please plan to arrive between 7 and 7:45 pm so we can be seated and start as close to 8 pm as possible. I provide snacks and non-alcoholic drinks. Please bring wine if you wish.
NOTE: the number of seats available shown on the Gm website is misleading because I also send out private invitations. Seats will fill faster than the Gm website indicates. I suggest signing up a least 5 or 6 days in advance.
