The Sostenutos play two complete piano quintets (string quartet plus piano). The Dohnanyi quintet, his opus 1 written when he was just 18, is melodic and strongly rhythmic; an evocative viola solo opens the tender 3rd movement. The piece has a grand ending. The Shostakovich quintet is one of his best-known works, composed in 1940, and awarded the Stalin Prize (there's a story there): five movements with a wide range of moods, often dark, but at times playful and humorous, and ending quietly. Each quintet runs just over 30 minutes. We'll take a break between.
What's the music?
Dohnanyi Piano Quintet Op. 1 in C minor, composed in 1895.
Shostakovich Piano Quintet Op. 57, composed in 1940.
