Composer and pianist Haskell Small has performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Spoleto Festival, to name a few. Google him to learn much more. Hal will join us for an hour of musical enchantment on our wonderful Kawai baby grand. Doors open at 2:30, concert at 3:00. No red wine please. Quiet children 5+ welcome. Mary and our two cats and I are looking forward to seeing you then!
PROGRAM
Mozart, Sonata in B-flat Major, K. 333 (Allegro, Andante cantabile, Allegretto grazioso)
-intermission-
Small, A Child's Dream
Chopin, f minor Ballade, Op. 52
About the program -- Hal writes:
"The Mozart is one of my favorites, full of vivaciousness and humor, and is unusual in taking on a concerto format, the last movement featuring a written out cadenza.
"My piece is essentially a spooky children's story. I imagine a haunted child, sliding down a rabbit hole into a mysterious, magical land, encountering scary hip-hopping monsters, becoming all alone and afraid, running for life, and... don't want to give it all away.
"And the Chopin, with its uniquely beautiful melody and ferociously exciting virtuosity, is of course one of the great romantic masterpieces."
