Building Bridges—Vintage Music of Latin America
Building Bridges celebrates the sensual spirit, lyrical, expressive melodies and pulsating rhythms of vintage habaneras, tangos, and waltzes, from Cuba, Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela and Mexico. These dance music styles were the forerunners of samba, salsa, and other Latin styles heard today. You'll hear familiar melodies and others that may be new to you, by composers Ernesto Nazareth, Ernesto Lecuona (made famous by Desi Arnaz, star of the I Love Lucy show), and more. Pianist Jacqueline Schwab, heard on Ken Burns’ PBS documentaries (Civil War, Baseball, Mark Twain, National Parks, and others) performs both classical arrangements and some of her own.
What's the music?
La Paloma (ca. 1863), by Sebastian Yradier (1809-1865)
Cuban habaneras by Ignacio Cervantes Kawanagh (1847-1905): Tiene Que Ser, Vuelta al Hogar and Ilusiones Perdidas
Brazilian tangos by Ernesto Nazareth (1863- 1934): Brejeiro and Carioca
Cascata da Lagrimas (Brazilian valsa-choro, 1939), by Moacry Braga
From Tango Suite, by Juan Jose Castro (1895-1968): Lloron and Milonguero
Intimas, Argentine tango by Alfonso Ramiro Lacueva (1904-1969)
Homenaje a Mi Pueblo, Venezuelan Waltz by Macario Gonzales
From Danzas Afro-Cubanas (Ernesto Lecuona, 1895-1963): Y La Negra Bailaba!
