May Evening of Guitar Solos & Duos

I'm excited to have guitarists Liz Hogg & Michael Vascones present an evening of music for solo and duo guitars, with composers ranging from the 17th to the 20th century.

Performing as a soloist, Liz Hogg has toured ten countries, playing numerous festivals and concert halls. Most recently, Ms. Hogg became the first American to win a fellowship to perform and study at the Lanciano International Guitar Festival in Italy. Other recent awards include the Mannes School of Music’s Dean Award, the Maurice Kagan Memorial Scholarship Award for Excellence in an Orchestral Instrument (first guitarist recipient) and a Fulbright-García Robles Scholarship semi-finalist.
In her hometown, Ms. Hogg has performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Brookfield Place, Morgan Library, and the Italian Academy, and internationally at venues including Portugal’s Casa da Música and Mexico’s Tlaqná Concert Hall. She has also performed live at radio stations including WFMU, WNYC and WHFR and has been a featured artist at festivals Internacional Camerata 21, CMJ and New Sounds Live.
As a composer and performer/singer of her own music and in various groups, Liz has recorded nine full-length albums and eight eps, self-released and released by Mouca, Acuarela and Don Giovanni Records. Her debut S/T solo album is due for a spring 2018 release via Mouca Records. Her latest song, “Ridge” is available for streaming. Her band’s most recent album, Wild Movement, garnered reviews from Big Takeover and NME, as well as a video premiere on MTV for its single “Drifters”.
After studying with William Anderson and graduating from Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College with a Bachelor of Music in guitar performance with honors, Ms. Hogg went on to receive a Master of Music in guitar performance at Mannes School of Music as a student of Michael Newman.
Ms. Hogg has recorded and performed on a variety of stringed instruments beyond guitar including mandolin, banjo, sitar, Hawaiian guitar, 5-string bass, theorbo and tiple, including theorbo and guitar in Mannes’ production of Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo, and banjo, classical, steel string and Hawaiian guitar at Kupferberg Center for the Arts’ production of The Threepenny Opera.
She has worked with conductors including Maurice Peress and Alan Pierson, performed in master classes for Scott Tennant, Álvaro Pierri, Richard Savino, and Arthur Kampela and has premiered works by David Lang, Robert Martin, Jakub Polaczyk, Linda Buckley and Ivan Vukosavljević.

Michael Vascones was born in 1998 in Queens, New York. Michael began playing guitar at the age of twelve, inspired by watching his father play at home. At fourteen, he was admitted to the Juilliard Music Advancement Program where he studied classical guitar with Bokyung Byun for two years. After that Michael spent two years studying at Manhattan School of Music Precollege with Mark Delpriora, where he was a recipient of the Dianne Danese Flagello Scholarship.
Michael has attended many summer music festivals including the Aspen Summer Music Festival and School, Music Horizons at the Eastman School of Music, and the Domaine Forget International Music Festival where he studied with Alvaro Pierri, Pepe Romero, and Bruce Holzman.

Michael has won first prize in competitions such as the National High School Classical Guitar Competition at the Long Island Guitar Festival (2015), the Southern Guitar Festival and Competition: Division II (2016), and the Domaine Forget International Music Festival Youth Competition (2016). Michael was also a finalist in the prestigious Guitar Foundation of America International Youth Competition, Senior Division (2016), and the Domaine Forget International Music Festival Adult Competition (2017).
Michael began his undergraduate studies at the Juilliard School in the fall of 2016, as a student of Sharon Isbin. At Juilliard, he has performed numerous times as a soloist, in chamber ensembles, and in a Dance Workshop.
