Let us spend a night of wonderfully virtuosic piano music: Johannes Brahms 's First Book of Variations of a Theme by Paganini and Franz Liszt's monumental Piano Sonata in B minor.
What's the music?
Brahms: Variations on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 35, Book I
~ Intermission ~
Liszt: Sonata in B minor, S 178
... because why not?? Let's see how these supposedly antipodal composers battle it out! There will be a casual discussion about virtuosity -- and, to use a slightly obnoxious term, "pianisms" of the nineteenth century.
P.S. Highly recommend bringing drinks and engaging in booze-like activities at intermission. Might make the through-composed massiveness of Liszt more manageable, and its lines a little more pleasantly blurry ;)
