Part of the reason we started Nights Out was to show our crowd all that classical music could be when it couldn't fit in a living room.
George Frederick Handel's music-drama Semele fits that bill.
Performed by the Handel and Haydn Society - at the ripe old-age of 202, the oldest continually performing arts organization in the United States - at Boston's magnificent jewel of a Symphony Hall, this was a Night Out we couldn't wait to share with our community.
Semele, of the human realm, gets whisked away by the gods and ends up pregnant with Jupiter's baby. Juno, Jupiter's wife (and sister!), is none-too-pleased and makes plans of her own. It's 3 hours of breathtaking music, heart-wrenching drama, decadence, and delight - a masterwork of truly epic proportions is presented by the leading early music ensemble in the country whose home is here in our great Boston.
Tickets for this concert are, on average, more than $50, but Groupmuse is getting an absolutely ridiculous deal: $15 for an evening on Olympus.
And, of course, because it's Groupmuse, everyone is invited to Brasserie Jo for a drink after the performance. Apparently it's the spot where the musicians always hang after a show and they'd love for us come along.
So join us as we tangle with the Gods.
