Have you heard of Lara St. John? A dynamite violinist, she founded her own record company in 1999 for artistic freedom. Then her Bach album became one of iTunes' best-sellers.
But in the late 1980s, after traveling through Eastern Europe and Russia because she was studying at the Moscow Conservatory when the Soviet Union fell (BADASS ALERT), she fell in love with Jewish, Roma, and other folk songs she heard. And this year, she and pianist/composer Matt Herskowitz have had some of today’s most exciting composers re-imagine those songs.
They made an album called Shiksa, and you're invited to the release party at WCRB's Fraser Studio January 20th.
You’ll get ripping versions of Hava Nagila, Misirlou (you've seen Pulp Fiction? You know this one), Czardas and more. She’s an absolute force of nature on the fiddle, and she'll be telling stories about her travels and these songs all night.
As usual, $5/monthly supporters of WCRB come for free and drink for free. Sign up here if this sounds too good to be true.
For everyone else, it's $10 at the door and there's a cash bar. This is a 21+ event so please bring ID.
What's the music?
