I’m delighted to welcome Baron Fenwick back to my home. His playing is at times awe-inspiring, at times humorous, or simple beautiful. I will have tea, water and snacks available. If you would like anything lease to drink please bring it, alcoholic or not. I look forward to seeing you all together in my cozy apartment.
What's the music?
Frederic Chopin — Three Mazurkas, op. 62
Franz Liszt — Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2
Maurice Ravel — Ondine
Roberto Scarcella Perino — Gina’s Garden
And maybe a little Bach, Rachmaninoff, and jazz!!
I’m so excited to bring you this repertoire from the virtuoso piano tradition. It’s going to be a lot of fun. Chopin and Liszt, born just a year a part in 1810 and 1809, were some of the first touring virtuosos when the piano was still only recently invented and popularized. You may recognize Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody, one of the most famous piano pieces ever written due to its frequent appearances in popular culture such as “Tom and Jerry.” These Chopin mazurkas, some of his last pieces, are rarely heard. I learned them last year for a festival traversing Chopin’s entire published works. They are unfamiliar even to most pianists, but they are gems! Ravel’s Ondine is a unique and beautiful work, representing the “impressionist” style that became especially popular on the piano.
Gina’s Garden, by my friend and beautiful composer Roberto Scarcella Perino, is a lovely collection of pieces named after flowers including the lively hibiscus, the seductive rose, the fierce snapdragon, and the charming forget-me-not.
