An old friend Nate is pulling together a super fun looking program of Ysaÿe (pronounced eez-eye) and Prokofiev sonatas with his duo partner Jooyeon, so let's have a potluck about it 🥳 I'll make a big vegetarian main for some hearty calories, but additional snacks, dishes, and bevs welcome! (Post in the comments if you'll bring something.)
What's the music?
The violin sonatas for two violins from Prokofiev and Ysaÿe are two of the finest in the repertoire. Prokofiev is at his best with this angular yet vibrant work. In four movements, the sonata expresses the essence of the Soviet feeling with melancholic melodies, coupled with fantastic outbursts throughout.
Not to be outdone, a rarely performed sonata from the giant of violin playing, Eugène Ysaÿe, offers a potpourri: from neo-classical ideas, to impressionistic textures, this fine three-movement sonata is sure to captivate.
