What's the music?

We'll be playing a selection of Bill Evan's most iconic compositions, featuring his arrangements and playing style which revolutionized the piano trio format.

Where does this music come from?

Bill was a pivotal musicians in the bebop era who played a central role in Miles Davis album "Kind of Blue" - which to date is the best selling jazz album of all time. Inspired by the impressionist harmony of Ravel, bill worked with Miles to construct the concept and mood for the album using modal harmony rather than traditional functional harmony. This departure led to a whole new wave of "cool bop" and "modal jazz" which was then further innovated by legends such as John Coltrane and McCoy Tyner (to name a few)

Bill's use of harmony and voicings of chords have now become "stock", meaning they're taught in every music school in the world. Some of the first voicings that students today learn on the piano, are voicings that bill pioneered and played on records like "So what".
